The MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival is set to commence soon, and preparations are in full swing to ensure that audiences and authors enjoy a spectacular experience. Pass Information

To accommodate various preferences and budgets, four types of passes will be available:

  • Friday Pass: $20 Regular | $15 Under 25
  • Saturday Pass: $35 Regular | $20 Under 25
  • Sunday Pass: $35 Regular | $20 Under 25
  • 3-Day Festival Pass: $75 Regular | $45 Under 25

Passes are mandatory for attending author conversations and presentations. However, events flagged as FREE on the schedule will not require a pass. For certain masterclasses, separate registration is necessary. A detailed schedule can be reviewed.

Masterclass Workshops

MOTIVE’s Creative Writing Masterclasses present a prime opportunity for budding writers to learn the art of crafting enchanting tales and unforgettable characters, facilitated by renowned authors and industry experts. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes, and writers of all levels are encouraged to participate.

University of Toronto Workshops

The University of Toronto will host complimentary forensic science workshops and lectures, which are quite popular and require prior registration:

  • The Answer at Your Fingertips: Ridge Patterns in Criminal Investigation: June 28 at 11 AM & 2:30 PM
  • Forensic Anthropology Workshop: June 29 at 11 AM
  • Right Down to the Bone: The Identity of Jane Doe: June 30 at 2 PM

Outdoor Discussions

Fans can gather in the outdoor quad for engaging conversations and panels, delving into writing processes, publishing industry insights, and Toronto’s dark historical tales. On both Saturday and Sunday, Toronto Crime Tours will share chilling stories that span over three decades of experiences as detectives in the city. The Crime Writers of Canada (CWC) will also feature panels and provide information at an on-site tent.

Highlights and Special Events

On Saturday night, attendees can partake in an Interactive Murder Mystery event, titled A Murder Most Proper, in partnership with BarTeam Theatre. This immersive experience is set in the 1930s with live music and refreshments. Admission to this intriguing event is included with the Saturday and 3-Day Festival Passes.

Book Signings and Festival Bookstore

The festival bookstore, managed by the University of Toronto Bookstore, will be conveniently located in Room 115 off the main lobby of Victoria College. A comprehensive reading list specific to the festival will also be available for browsing.

  • Saturday: 10:30 AM – 9 PM
  • Sunday: 10:30 AM – 6 PM

Book signings will occur in the Victoria College lobby post-events, with additional remote book sales for events held in the Isabel Bader Theatre.

Transportation to Victoria University

Given the anticipated crowd over the festival weekend, it is prudent to plan travel in advance, allowing extra time to accommodate potential delays.

Public Transit Directions

From Museum Station

  • Arrive at Museum Station and follow the signs for the Royal Ontario Museum.
  • Ascend the stairs to Queen’s Park and maintain a leftward course at the fork.
  • Cross at the pedestrian crosswalk and continue straight.
  • Proceed up the ramp/stairs to reach Victoria College!

From Bay Station

  • Exit Bay Station and follow the signs toward Bay Street and Bellair Street.
  • Ascend the stairs, turning right at the top.
  • Walk south on Bay Street, crossing Bloor Street; continue south one block to Charles Street.
  • Take a right and head west until reaching the Isabel Bader Theatre; turn right at the main entrance to access Victoria College.
