Young V&A recently launched a dynamic program for the half-term centered around the theme of ‘This Is Me!’. Costume Project

This project combined the creative efforts of back-of-house interpretation colleagues with the Young V&A Front of House Assistants, resulting in the establishment of fresh costumes for The Stage. Visitors can tell stories, engage in performance, and interact with an array of artifacts from the V&A collections.

The project not only enhanced the participant’s understanding of the Young V&A commissioning process but also equipped them with training on crafting briefs and addressing visitor needs. The FoH Assistants collaborated in groups, designing costumes that later received constructive feedback from curators. Eventually, several costumes were brought to life by a professional costume maker, while others were lovingly crafted by those with sewing expertise. These creations are now available for public use within the Imagine Gallery, warmly embraced by visitors of all ages.

Max Lamb’s Tactile Stools

In addition, the Interpretation Team has been granted funding from the Wolfson Foundation to develop tactile stools aimed at enhancing accessibility within the Young V&A galleries. Collaborating with designer Max Lamb, workshops were conducted in partnership with the Together Space, allowing families to test various materials and textures.

As a result, four unique stools were created, each made from a distinct core material—wood, plastic, metal, and fabric. These stools not only reflect the diverse design processes but also invite exploration through a range of tactile surfaces and innovative elements, often utilizing found or thrifted components.

The Significance of Play

In tandem with on-site programs, Young V&A continues to strengthen partnerships advocating for the critical importance of play during childhood. A notable example is the ‘Power of Play’ initiative, led by The LEGO Group, with collaborative partners including Young V&A, Easy Peasy, Save the Children, and the Institute of Imagination. Initiated in 2024, the Power of Play aims to elevate children’s holistic skills and well-being by increasing access to play-based learning opportunities while empowering caregivers and educators to facilitate these experiences effectively.
